Who buys Rwanda’s smuggled coltan? The global journey of conflict coltan from DRC to the world’s electronics
Where have over 2,000 tonnes of smuggled conflict coltan gone?
These looted minerals come from mines in Rubaya in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which produce 15% of the world’s tantalum, a key ingredient for electronic products found in smartphones, laptops and cars around the world.
The Rubaya mines have become a main revenue source for M23’s brutal warfare in DRC. Seizing vast areas of territory, the armed group backed by Rwanda’s military has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians, abducting and torturing with impunity.
But once the coltan is smuggled to Rwanda, little is known about who buys it or where it goes.
In a year-long investigation, Global Witness followed the DRC’s conflict coltan from the mines across the border and into global supply chains. We established the complicity of Rwandan officials, as smuggling reached “unprecedented” levels.
With Rwanda’s coltan exports more than doubling over the past three years, we identified the seven companies that exported 85% of the coltan.
Through interviews with coltan smugglers, we found that at least five of these seven companies buy conflict coltan from DRC, selling it on through middlemen to smelters in China and Kazakhstan.

Video One got me. It is a video of the pattern of Africa. It is Eastern Congo revisited, this time in Nigeria.

On the 29 May 2026 a village in Kogi State, Nigeria was attacked. The images are the same as the ones from the DRC. Men, women, children sliced up by machete. Only, they weren’t all dead. One survivor , a baby crying still strapped to his mother`s back.

It is just like the photo after one of Paul Kagame`s RPF massacres on a refugee camp in North Kivu, DRC. Bodies strewn, dead, hacked about. One survivor. A toddler crying by his dead mother.

The Turks star in this video but it could just as easily be the Americans, the British, the Israelis, the EUropeans and God forbid for the BRICS lovers, the Russians or the Chinese.

The Fulani herdsmen and I call them by that full name because that is part of the Theatre, the Mineral Mafia`s Theatre of the Absurd. Nigerien military are present in this video. What is General Tiani of Niger up to? Is it uranium in the sacks?
It’s like the video footage from DRC showing M23-RPF terrorists marching in file past the UN Casque Bleu contingent while they picnic under a tree, turning a blind eye. Or the UN helicopters dropping boxes of `stuff` behind M23-RPF lines. Or the Rwandan regular army marching through Bukavu and the world`s media call them M23, protectors of the Congolese Tutsi , and the coltan mines of Rubaya.

Video Three is a ground shaker only it will disappear under the bridge and into the sea of information, mostly misinformation. It is a sort of repeat of the DDR Program (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration) run by MONUSCO, which is the International Minerals Mafia`s charade of peacekeeping in Eastern Congo. The pre April 1994 Rwandan military ( FDLR – formerly FAR ( Force Armees Rwandais ) were subjected to laying down their weapons and being returned to Rwanda. That itself was a charade because no FDLR fighter would be so stupid as to return willingly to Paul Kagame`s Rwanda. So the International Mineral Mafia told Paul Kagame to create a new FDLR which he did by emptying Rwandan prisons and ordering the conscripts to go terrorize Kinyarwandan speaking ( mostly Tutsi) civilians in eastern Congo so that Rwanda would have justification for invading DRC.

“The Boko Haram are being rehabilitated. Now what do they do after being rehabilitated ? They fill forms that ask questions: How many people have you killed? So if you kill 50 you have your own class. 50 and above 20 [ another class]and [ another class for those that say} I have never killed. So if you have never killed maybe you stay there one month and go off. If you kill small number, 2 month [ of rehabilitation classes] . If you kill many : 6 month.
Which type of ammunition that you use? Then that is the people that they are going to pay them a pay off. A pay off of 3 million. And a monthly salary of 50 000 . I’m saying this. It should be shocking. I’m revealing this .
After having been rehabilitated, what happens next? If you cannot live without a gun? The government will provide gun for you. As a civilian JTF [ Joint Task Force], you all know that they are here in Abuja. Most of them are repented Boko Haram. Some of them that cannot stay in the society , they are being exported to Algeria to go and attack the miners. To go and do illegal mining, gold mining in Algeria and be paid. If they sustain gunshot they are going to be transported back to Maiduguri and treated in the University of Maiduguri teaching hospital through the Government of Borno State. The repented IDPs , repented Boko Harams and also the civilian JTF go to Zamfara. They are there. The Government of Zamfara is paying them 70 000 . The Government is paying 70 000 to the Borno State Government . The Borno State Government is paying them 50 000.
Meaning it is a job. It is a business. It is not a crime to start a business. If the business is being recognized by our government. `The business that I am craving for is to start my terrorism`.
[Me], I am not going to terrorize anybody. I am going to fight back. It has been so painful that the killer of my Dad is being paid with taxpayers’ money. The abductors of our wives, our children, our sisters are being paid off by the taxpayers’ money. They drive luxury car with escort. There is one man that slaughtered 96 people a day. On May 17, the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Western media is treating this as a health story. On Frontline Africa, we will not. This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in Congo since 1976. The epicenter is Mongbwalu, a gold mining town in Ituri province — one of the most heavily militarized, mineral-rich, donor-dependent regions on the entire African continent.
The Bundibugyo strain that is now spreading has no approved vaccine. The DRC’s surveillance network failed to detect it for 4 weeks. Four health workers died before the alarm was raised. Cases have now reached Kinshasa, Goma (under M23 control), and Kampala. In this episode, we walk through the verified facts, the geopolitical context the western press is leaving out, the structural reasons why eastern Congo keeps becoming ground zero for these outbreaks, the link to the Trump minerals deal of December 2025, the Rwanda border closure, Uganda’s response, and the rumours that ordinary Congolese have circulated about why this keeps happening to their country. We centre Africa in global affairs with analysis, not emotion.

How Paul Kagame Deliberately Sacrificed the Tutsi
Only the Tutsi genocide was broadcast around the world and later depicted in the Hollywood movie “Hotel Rwanda.”
On October 1, 1990, Ugandan troops invaded Rwanda from Uganda. They wore Ugandan uniforms, drove Ugandan vehicles, and carried weapons from the Ugandan arsenal. They were led by top-ranking officers in the Ugandan military who had family roots in Rwanda and called themselves the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). Led by then General, now President Paul Kagame, they were determined to seize power in Rwanda and re-establish the ethno-supremacist Tutsi rule that had ended with the Hutu Power Revolution of 1959.
They succeeded after waging a four-year war, with the help of the US, and though Rwanda pretends to have ended ethnic division and exclusion, a Wikileaks diplomatic cable reveals that all top government positions are in fact held by Tutsi, and Rwanda reconciliation is a lie. Only Tutsi are allowed to publicly mourn their family members who died in the 90-day massacres of 1994, and the description “genocide against the Tutsi” is legally codified and enforced. Anyone using any other description faces prison time in Rwanda.
The invasion violated international law and Rwanda’s sovereignty, but the world barely noticed. The UN Security Council declined to even discuss it, despite the request of Rwanda’s Ambassador to the UN. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni had just become President of the Organization of African Unity (OAU)—which later became the African Union—and as such, he assumed the role of “mediator” even though he was the principal aggressor and, of course, had no interest in upholding international law.
In How Paul Kagame Deliberately Sacrificed the Tutsi, former Rwandan Ambassador to Paris Jean-Marie Ndagijimana writes, “Two months earlier, on 2 August, 1990, Iraq under Saddam Hussein invaded its little neighbor Kuwait, and the international community went to work to put out the oil pipeline fires in what is the world’s premier oil reserve. So we poor Negroes could kill one another in silence without bothering the masters of the world who were busy elsewhere.”
The ensuing four-year war included the RPF’s horrific massacres, including targeted massacres of Hutus, but it was still barely noticed by the international community until it finally concluded in the 90-day bloodbath that included both Tutsi and Hutu genocides. Only the Tutsi genocide was broadcast around the world and later depicted in the Hollywood movie “Hotel Rwanda.”
Millions of people saw “Hotel Rwanda,” and the Rwandan Genocide thus came to be understood ahistorically, as a sudden 90-day episode of mass psychosis and bloodlust in which the Hutu majority attempted to exterminate the Tutsi minority. Hutu people have been demonized not only in Rwanda but around the world ever since. For thirty years, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been allowed to wage a devastating war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the grounds that he is hunting Hutus who were guilty of the genocide against the Tutsi and who still threaten Rwanda.
“Stopping the next Rwanda” became the battle cry of the humanitarian warriors led by Samantha Power, who built her career on “Bystanders to Genocide,” her crusading critique of the Clinton administration for failing to stop the genocide. She insisted that we must all from hereon be “upstanders,” not bystanders to genocide, most notably in Libya and Syria, but she hasn’t called for any upstanding to stop genocide in Gaza.
How Paul Kagame Deliberately Sacrificed the Tutsi is one of many important books that tell the far more complex story of both Hutu and Tutsi genocides that took place over four years in Rwanda and years after that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
