Railway for Peace: Burundian President Drums Support for Burundi-DRC-Tanzania Railway

Burundi and the DRC had signed on Saturday August 20, 2022 in Kinshasa in the DRC a bilateral agreement for implementation financing and a request for financing to be sent to the AfDB for the feasibility studies for the construction of the standard gauge railway, Gitega-Bujumbura-Uvira-Kindu section.

For peace in DRC, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye has called for support of the EAC initiative such as the trans-regional railway designed to link Burundi, DRC and Tanzania.

Speaking at the 77th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations held in New York, the President Ndayishimiye, said the mega project will contribute to the return of peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to Evariste Ndayishimiye, the EAC countries aim to stabilize the entire community so that the people of these countries can focus on socio-economic development projects.

He noted that the railway will open up the region and boost the economy of the three countries, thereby reducing poverty induced conflicts.

The President said that Burundi, with the DRC and Tanzania are working closely to achieve the railways project Uvinza- Musongati- Gitega-Bujumbura-Uvira-Kindu, which will connect the the countries and the two oceans, Atlantic and Indian.

According to Ndayishimiye, this mega-project will not only boost the economies of the three countries, but also facilitate the movement of goods and people in the sub-region.

‘Are We Actually Governed by Lunatics?’

Sept. 24—For once, a European mainstream publication has written the truth! Weltwoche, a Swiss weekly news magazine, published an online editorial September 23, under the title, “Are We Actually Governed by Lunatics?” Pointing to President Joe Biden, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Swiss President Ignazio Cassis, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Weltwoche, Roger Köppel wrote:

The more the Americans and the Europeans get caught up in their feverish spiral of aggression, the longer and more globally and more dangerous this war will become.

To get out of the quagmire, he says, Europe would have to—

restrain the Biden administration, set limits to the Ukrainians with their camera-toting charismatic President Zelensky, who could yet fall ill with the Messiah syndrome. Risking a world war against Russia is madness. Peace negotiations are called for…. Geopolitically, they have let it come to a nuclear war against Russia, not because Putin is crazy, but because they do not take the Russians seriously, probably also under deep-seated racist prejudices, treating them disparagingly, whistle at their interests, while one puts one’s own interest—power-hungry and self-intoxicated—above everything.

Meanwhile, with the Doomsday Clock now only seconds before midnight, the military, the media, and the U.S. and British political leadership rant that it is all Russia’s fault. It is obvious to the entire world that President Putin means exactly what he says, when he states that once the referenda are completed, Moscow will quickly accept all four oblasts into the Russian Federation. With that, any military assault on one or more of the new states of Russia will be viewed as a foreign invasion of the motherland, and the Russian military will respond. As is clearly articulated in the nuclear posture of the Russian Federation, if the existence of the motherland is threatened, the use of nuclear weapons may be used.

South Africa’s Small Nuclear Reactors

Naturally, the anti-nuclear greens, who are politically powerful and control most of the media, would try to stop it. If we could sort these things out, South Africa could lead the world on small, extremely safe nuclear reactors, make a lot of money selling them, and help us to get out of the electricity calamity that is plaguing our economy and our people.

South Africa’s small nuclear reactors

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are in vogue now, and it so happens that South Africa is a world leader in this nuclear technology. “Modular” means that the power units come in modules, which are made in factories rather than on construction sites.

Our Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) was the most advanced in the world and came close to commercial operation before the project was abandoned. We are now in advanced stages of design for two smaller, simpler SMRs, which have the potential to gain huge markets at home and abroad, notably in Africa where most countries have small electricity grids. They also have the potential to provide plentiful, safe, reliable and affordable electricity for South Africa.

There is sometimes a conception that SMRs are a magic pill that will overcome insurmountable difficulties in conventional nuclear power reactors. This is wrong on two counts. Conventional nuclear reactors, which are large, do not have insurmountable difficulties. For over sixty years they have provided the world with the safest, cleanest, most reliable, most sustainable grid electricity it has ever known, always affordable and often the cheapest energy available. They do have certain problems though, such as their large size, the long time it takes to shut them down safely, and the slight chance of serious accidents.

SMRs can remove any chance of serious accidents. They can be used in niche markets, such as in small countries, in remote settings, and to provide heat and power to industries. But, in the initial stages at least, their electricity will be more expensive per kilowatt-hour (kWh) than that from conventional reactors.

Population of Uganda 44 million. Only 24 million doses of vaccine administered, including first and second dose. Only 50% of population had 1 dose. 75% of population had zero dose.  4000 deaths due to Covid.

More people died during the pandemic of preventable diseases like Malaria. Tragic high rates of suicide due to stress of being prohibitted from earning a daily income, unable to feed family. Stringent lockdown measures in Uganda. Banned public transport including motorbikes. All markets closed. No travel between districts. 2 years of lockdown.

“People suffered more from the lockdown measures than Covid itself.”

Observation: rural areas suffered zero Covid deaths. More affluent more likely to have co-morbidity like diabetes or cancer. Higher death rate of higher income groups.

Common parasitic infections helped build immunity to Covid.
