The Morocco-Spain railway tunnel project was first officially in the year 1979 as King Juan Carlos I of Spain and King Hassan I of Morocco signed an agreement for the development of this crucial project that is set to boost relations between the continent of Europe and Africa.

It has just been recently revealed by The Daily Telegraph that Spain-Morocco Tunnel Studies (financial and strategic studies) are reportedly being conducted for the implementation of the £6 billion high-speed railway route that is set to run across the Strait of Gibraltar linking Spain and Morocco and is expected to commence its operations by the year 2030.

As recently reported, currently the Moroccan National Company for Strait Studies mentioned that they are currently busy working trying to figure out funding for the Morocco-Spain tunnel project that has been quoted at a price of $6 billion.

The underwater part of the Morocco-Spain Tunnel is expected to span a total distance of 28 kilometers with its deepest point expected to at 475 meters below sea level. The plans for the tunnel would see it link Punta Paloma which is located in the southern part of Spain and Malabata, which is located in the east of Tangier, Morocco.

The ongoing talks between Morocco and Spain have brought to light that they to have dug the Morocco- Spain Tunnel to have been completed before the start of the 2030 FIFA World Cup that is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This world cup will be the very first world cup in history to be held by three countries across two separate continents and the first to be held in Africa since the year 2010.

Capacity of the Tunnel

As revealed by the Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies across the Strait of Gibraltar (SEGESCA), the tunnel once complete could enable the travel for 12.8 million passengers in a year.

The first proposals for the “Europe-Africa Gibraltar Strait fixed link” were first mothballed in the year 2009 but were later brought back to life in April 2023 when the Spanish-Moroccan commission for this tunnel project met again for the first time after a period of 14 years.

Challenges Facing the Spain-Morocco Tunnel Studies Project

The studies on the tunnel connecting Spain to Morocco date all the way back to the 1930s when Spain first presented a proposal and it got to hire engineers to conduct studies on the geology of the crossing. However, a major problem was encountered as after the discovery that the rock that lies under the Strait was very hard therefore making the possibility of digging a tunnel nearly impossible with the technology they had during the time.

During the year 2006, Lombardi Engineering, a Swiss company, was awarded the contract of drafting a design of the Spain-Morocco Railway Tunnel. With its studies that they undertook, the company compared the construction of the Spain-Morocco tunnel with that of the Channel Tunnel but it stated that both the depth and geological conditions would make the construction works of the project even more complex. This is as a result of the existence of two deep Quaternary clay channels in the middle of the Strait and as a result of the presence of a major geologic fault, the Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault, which has resulted to occurrence of earthquake in the region.

Former President Muammar Gaddafi made Libya incredible wealthy by nationalizing their oil and the banking system. The country had big gold and silver reserves, and no depth to The World Bank or International Monetary Fund (IMF) – which is exceptionally unusual in the region. At the time that Norway invaded and dropped 588 bombes over the country, Gaddafi was in the process of creating an African currency backed by gold. He also held a speech in the UN General Assembly, where he addressed Western corruption. Lawton believes that the financial interests of “the bankers” are behind the Libyan war – as well as the current ones in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza.

More than 2,500 people have died or gone missing this year making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe in 2023, according to the UN refugee agency.

“By September 24, over 2,500 people were accounted as dead or missing in 2023 alone,” Ruven Menikdiwela, director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told the UN Security Council on Thursday, showing a sharp surge in the number of suspected casualties compared to 2022.

Menikdiwela added that out of the 186,000 asylum seekers who successfully crossed the Mediterranean Sea so far this year, 83 percent landed in Italy while the rest landed in Greece, Spain, Cyprus, and Malta, as well as other European countries.

She said the two North African countries of Tunisia and Libya were the main points of departure along the sea routes chosen by those seeking asylum in Europe.

Menikdiwela warned that the equally perilous land routes to Europe were also extremely dangerous and the UNHCR sees “no end in sight” to the lives lost not only at sea, but also on land.

“Lives are also lost on land, away from public attention,” Menikdiwela warned.

She said the asylum seekers “risk death and gross human rights violations at every step” of their journey – usually from conflict zones – in pursuit of a safe and secure life in Europe.

In Libya, where there are nearly 50,000 refugees and asylum seekers registered with the UNHCR, “the conditions of thousands of refugees and migrants in both official and unofficial detention facilities… remains of grave concern,” Menikdiwela said.

She said more than 45,000 had tried to cross the Mediterranean from Libya and 102,000 people attempted to cross from Tunisia, a 260-percent increase compared to last year.

The UNHCR figures were similar to those presented by Par Liljert, director of the International Office for Migration (IOM).

“Recent IOM data demonstrates that from January to September 2023, more than 187,000 individuals crossed the Mediterranean in pursuit of a better future and the promise of safety,” Liljert told the Security Council.

The head of the Central African Republic (CAR) has accused the Western countries of triggering a migration crisis by pillaging Africa’s natural resources through slavery and colonization.

Taking the podium at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Faustin-Archange Touadera addressed the migrant crisis on the Italian island of Lampedusa, where thousands of African migrants arrived last week.

“These young people who symbolize the present and the future of our continent are desperately seeking to join the countries of the European continent in search of an El Dorado,” Touadera said.

“This escalation of the migrant crisis is one of the appalling consequences of the plundering of natural resources of countries made poor by slavery, colonization and Western imperialism, terrorism and internal armed conflicts,” he added.

Elsewhere in his speech, Touadera said that Africa must be given a greater say in solving the migrant crisis.

“The UN must go beyond our common commitment to revive global solidarity by involving African countries in the search for global solutions to the migration crises and the existential issues facing young people on the African continent,” he said.
