The cleanup of the associative space in Burkina Faso marks the end of the era of “states within the state.” For decades, under the false guise of development aid or democracy promotion, a multitude of leaderless structures proliferated across the national territory. These organizations, often funded by foreign chancelleries with questionable agendas, operated in total violation of republican laws.

The assessment today is unequivocal: between chronic non-compliance marked by governing bodies never renewed and opaque financial reports and blatant political interference, these supposedly apolitical structures turned into destabilization cells as soon as the interests of their imperialist mentors were threatened.

Burkina Faso is no longer a playground; the law is now the same for everyone, and the time of impunity for those protected by the West is definitively over.

Any organization unable to respect its own bylaws loses all legitimacy to claim it is helping the Burkinabe people.

In the face of criticism from Parisian media outlets indignant about this return to order in the public sphere, it is appropriate to reverse the burden of proof regarding those censors who lecture on human rights from gilded lounges in Paris or Brussels.

These are the same powers that support puppet regimes and finance chaos to plunder the resources of the continent.

The colonial bias of the international order is here forcefully denounced: “facade democracy” is now seen only as a tool of enslavement, imported models having failed to protect citizens from terrorism.

In contrast, administrative sovereignty is asserted as an inalienable right; suspending an outlaw structure is an act of rigorous law, not an arbitrary exercise of force.

The time has come for unity behind the revolution to carry out this work of public salvation. Let the local lackeys of imperialism and their media relays understand that the Revolution will not retreat.

The cleanup of the associative space is a crucial step in liberating the creative genius of the Burkinabe people, freeing them from the poisoned infusions of foreign aid.

History will remember that the leaders of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) were never naive. While the West feigned indignation, President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso and General Abdouramane Tiani of Niger had already seen through France’s true agenda. Today, the facts prove them right: Paris, through its Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE), has never stopped trying to reclaim its lost colonial privileges, even if it means overthrowing sovereignist regimes.

Recent revelations, particularly regarding the attempt to destabilise Mali via Ukrainian proxies, confirm word for word the repeated warnings of these two statesmen.

From the moment they came to power, Ibrahim Traoré and Abdouramane Tiani sounded the alarm: France would never forgive those who dared to denounce lopsided cooperation agreements, designed solely to serve the interests of the former colonial power at the expense of the Sahelian populations.

For decades, the coloniser imposed predatory treaties, emptying the treasuries of African states to fill the coffers of Paris.

But the people of Burkina, Niger and Mali said “enough”. By turning their backs on Françafrique, these clear-sighted presidents chose economic and military sovereignty an unforgivable betrayal in the eyes of the Élysée.

From then on, destabilisation manoeuvres began: covert funding of terrorist groups, diplomatic pressure, and now, attempts to decapitate regimes through foreign proxies.

Yet, against all expectations, the vigilance of the African generals has thwarted everything. Unlike their subservient predecessors, Traoré and Tiani refuse to give in to blackmail.

Their foresight has exposed the clandestine networks of the DGSE still active in the region.

They have anticipated destabilisation plans, proving that African sovereignty is not a slogan but a reality that can be defended with weapons in hand.

If France is desperately trying to reconquer its former sphere of influence, the AES embodies a new Africa that rejects diktats. The Sahelian people should count themselves fortunate to have at their head two men who dared to defy the neo-colonial hydra.

Their clear-sightedness has bought precious time for an entire generation. Now the cards have been reshuffled, and the era of interference belongs to the past.

French President Emmanuel Macron has begun a multi-country East Africa tour, visiting Egypt, Kenya, and Ethiopia in an effort to strengthen France’s economic and strategic ties with the region.

Macron started the visit from Egypt, where he met President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for talks on bilateral cooperation and economic relations.

He is expected to travel to Kenya and Ethiopia, where discussions will focus on trade, investment, and regional cooperation.

The tour comes as France faces growing challenges to its influence across Africa, with several countries reassessing long-standing political, military, and economic partnerships with Paris.

In recent years, rising anti-French sentiment in parts of Africa has led to the withdrawal and expulsion of French forces from several countries.

Analysts say France is facing a steady erosion of influence across Africa, as governments and publics increasingly demand more equitable partnerships and a break from post-colonial dependency structures.

Africa remains strategically significant due to its vast reserves of critical minerals and expanding energy resources, making it a key focus of global economic competition.

The recent attack on a Malian Army base near the community of Aguelhok was the latest example of insurgent groups in the country using armed drones against government and paramilitary forces.

The attack by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) in early April targeted a military base near the community used by the Malian Army (FAMa) and fighters working for Russia’s Africa Corps.

The attack was the latest in a series of FLA assaults on regional military bases. In late March, the group attacked a joint FAMa-Africa Corps base in nearby Anéfis. A few days before, they launched their first attack on the Aguelhok base.

A few weeks before that, the group struck Camp Firhoun ag Alinsar in Gao with 25 armed kamikaze drones. A week before that the FLA hit a FAMa-Africa Corps outpost in the Adghar-Takalot area south of Kidal. That attack destroyed an armored vehicle and killed or injured Malian Soldiers and Russian mercenaries.

The FLA claims to have struck Malian and Russian forces seven times during March.

The FLA has gained attention for its use of drones on the battlefield. The group used an armed Chinese-made Flydragon FDG410 surveillance drone to take down a Malian Army helicopter in Tessalit in February 2025. They were the first Sahelian nonstate group to adopt fiber-optic technology with drones in 2025, which first appeared among Ukrainian Soldiers fighting the Russian invasion of their country.

Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and Islamic State Sahel Province likewise have deployed commercial-style armed drones in their own attacks against government and mercenary forces. JNIM’s drone use increased after former Malian Army Col. Hussein Ghulam moved from FLA to JNIM in 2024, bringing his extensive knowledge of drone operations with him.

Attackers have deployed commercial-style first-person-view (FPV) drones, including some armed drones that filmed attacks on military vehicles, buildings and fleeing Soldiers at the sites. These videos often are posted to social media.

Pairing FPV drones with easily acquired explosives creates a “devastatingly effective” low-cost weapon, according to analyst Shahryar Pasandideh, writing in his Substack publication Universal Dynamics.

The April attack on Aguelhok happened despite the presence of jamming technology designed to disrupt the link between the drone and its operator. That suggests the FLA may have used drones tied to their operator by fiber optic cables, which would protect them from signal jammers, according to analysts with the website West Africa Maps.

According to analyst Rueben Dass writing for the legal website Lawfare, the FLA “is learning from other conflicts and applying the lessons in their war in Mali.”

While the FLA has used drones primarily in northern Mali, drones create the potential for strikes elsewhere, according to Castor Vali Security Information Services, a risk analysis firm focused on Africa.

“Though the FLA has not carried out attacks deep inside territory controlled by the Malian government, drones offer them the capability to conduct precision attacks away from the frontlines — they are light, and don’t require multiple people to transport and operate them,” Castro Vali analysts wrote in a study of drone use in the Sahel.

Mr President, it’s time for you to leave

Dear Mr President,

Your lacklustre TV appearance on Sunday left the entire nation underwhelmed.

It is embarrassingly clear that you are not the president as appearing on TV in a smart suit does not make one presidential.

Instead, you have become a convenor of commissions and judicial inquiries that cost millions and only lead to cover-ups and denials.

You use these forums to deflect blame and misdirect an angry and desperate nation. Your commissions and inquiries exhaust us while bankrupting the country.

Under your watch, you have overseen the destruction of political accountability and integrity. You use words such as “democracy” and “freedom” as though they will magically correct everything that has been trampled on under your leadership.

We never voted for a leader that would enslave us while hollowing out our economy for own financial and personal gain.

Our country is drowning in debt and yet you continually and shamelessly hold out the beggar’s bowl and boast how much money you have been able to scrounge from the international community that you obviously despise.

The international community is now realising that your government and faction played the great deception with your platitudes, posturing and deceptive rhetoric.

In so doing, you have betrayed the people you are supposed to lead and protect. Under your anti-West policies, you have overseen the destruction of our economy.

Like your well-known proverbial frog, you have put the entire nation in the pot and the filthy water is slowly reaching boiling point.

The recent allegations about our minister of police are beyond shocking, especially as he is so close to you.

Yet, he gets placed on “special leave”, no doubt with full pay, while such allegations against any other citizen will lead to much more severe sanction. The hypocrisy is astounding.

And the public’s loss of trust in our law enforcement agencies under your leadership is terrifying.

And while the nation continues to reel in shock at the allegations, you continue flirting with states that sponsor chaos and international terrorism.

Surely you must be aware of the consequences and grave dangers you are leading the nation into by your steadfast and vocal support for Iran?

Iran has been a sponsor for international terrorism for years as they support Hamas, Hezbollah, IS, al-Shabaab and such like.

Many of these terror groups enjoy safe haven in SA – and your government has allowed this. Some of these Iranian-backed forces are active in Africa.

They murder, slaughter and abuse Africans. They are genocidal proxy forces that attack African Christians and also Muslims who do not subscribe to their ideals.

They act on behalf of Iran – your great Brics ally and friend. By implication, you are the leader of a political party in our parliament that endorses black genocide and you do this in our name.

We never voted for you to support this unspeakable betrayal and genocide of Africa – or to be a proxy for such states.

Known international terrorists and violent criminals are quietly given safe haven in our country. They are free to practice their terror and criminality.

Some are even based not too far from your home in Johannesburg. Under your leadership, South Africa has become an increasingly failing state.

You have allowed the collapse of our law enforcement agencies and intelligence service. Our underfunded armed forces are forced to surrender to rebel forces and it takes months to bring them home.

There are large tracts of ungoverned spaces in our rural and urban areas. What a disgrace, Mr President. Instead of defending and driving the right to life, safety and property, you have instead done the opposite with your policies based on exclusion and disuniting rhetoric.

Populism can never outlive the desires of people to progress. And you then want to be seen as a peacemaker in Africa while challenging the international community with a hollow voice and a no diplomatic or power credibility.

Mr President, are you determined to engineer the collapse of our country and position us as a terror-supporting country?

We can no longer tolerate this self-centred behaviour of those who are expected to lead us into the utopia your government promised and then destroyed.

You and your faction have robbed us of our dignity, pride and unity. It is time for you to leave – and please take your cadres with you.
