It has just been recently revealed by The Daily Telegraph that Spain-Morocco Tunnel Studies (financial and strategic studies) are reportedly being conducted for the implementation of the £6 billion high-speed railway route that is set to run across the Strait of Gibraltar linking Spain and Morocco and is expected to commence its operations by the year 2030.

As recently reported, currently the Moroccan National Company for Strait Studies mentioned that they are currently busy working trying to figure out funding for the Morocco-Spain tunnel project that has been quoted at a price of $6 billion.

The underwater part of the Morocco-Spain Tunnel is expected to span a total distance of 28 kilometers with its deepest point expected to at 475 meters below sea level. The plans for the tunnel would see it link Punta Paloma which is located in the southern part of Spain and Malabata, which is located in the east of Tangier, Morocco.

The ongoing talks between Morocco and Spain have brought to light that they to have dug the Morocco- Spain Tunnel to have been completed before the start of the 2030 FIFA World Cup that is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This world cup will be the very first world cup in history to be held by three countries across two separate continents and the first to be held in Africa since the year 2010.

Capacity of the Tunnel

As revealed by the Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies across the Strait of Gibraltar (SEGESCA), the tunnel once complete could enable the travel for 12.8 million passengers in a year.

The first proposals for the “Europe-Africa Gibraltar Strait fixed link” were first mothballed in the year 2009 but were later brought back to life in April 2023 when the Spanish-Moroccan commission for this tunnel project met again for the first time after a period of 14 years.

Challenges Facing the Spain-Morocco Tunnel Studies Project

The studies on the tunnel connecting Spain to Morocco date all the way back to the 1930s when Spain first presented a proposal and it got to hire engineers to conduct studies on the geology of the crossing. However, a major problem was encountered as after the discovery that the rock that lies under the Strait was very hard therefore making the possibility of digging a tunnel nearly impossible with the technology they had during the time.

During the year 2006, Lombardi Engineering, a Swiss company, was awarded the contract of drafting a design of the Spain-Morocco Railway Tunnel. With its studies that they undertook, the company compared the construction of the Spain-Morocco tunnel with that of the Channel Tunnel but it stated that both the depth and geological conditions would make the construction works of the project even more complex. This is as a result of the existence of two deep Quaternary clay channels in the middle of the Strait and as a result of the presence of a major geologic fault, the Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault, which has resulted to occurrence of earthquake in the region.

The African Continent Rallies Behind One of its Most Ambitious Construction Projects: the Standard Gauge Railway

The African continent is rallying behind the construction of a standard gauge railway that links the East and West Coast. The ambitious project is in line with the African infrastructure network that seeks to ensure seamless connectivity. Based on the remarks offered by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Transport, this is the ultimate objective of the SGR. The standard gauge railway will connect the East Coast in Mombasa, Kenya to the West Coast in Douala, Cameroon. The implementation of the project is already taking shape with various partner states already showing interest.

The Government of Kenya recently hosted the Regional Standard Gauge Railways (SGR) Cluster Meetings for the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP) in Mombasa through the Ministry of Roads and Transport. The SGR Cluster is one of 14 Clusters under the NCI Programme and was chaired by Uganda. The primary objective of the meeting was to accelerate the implementation of the SGR by the various partner states involved. This includes states such as Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Significance of the Standard Gauge Railway Linking the East Coast and the West Coast

Once completed, the standard gauge railway linking the East Coast and the West Coast will be immensely beneficial. The railway line will ensure seamless connectivity between various regions across the African continent. “The ultimate objective, under the African infrastructure network, is to make sure that we connect the East coast here in Mombasa and the West coast through Douala in Cameroon,” noted Kenya’s cabinet secretary of transport, Kipchumba Murkomen.

The cabinet secretary was also keen to note that the seamless connectivity will be implemented through Kenya’s sister countries. The railway line will facilitate the transportation sector as a supplement to road transport. Currently, most of the cargo travelling from East to West Africa places a heavy reliance on road transport. The standard gauge railway between the countries will also create special economic zones within these countries. The creation of these zones will immensely facilitate economic and social improvement in the continent.

The Scope of Implementation of the Ambitious Project

The Standard gauge railway linking the East and West African coast seeks to start its connectivity from Kenya. The Kenyan government has already put in place measures to ensure that it is in line with the project’s implementation schedule. Kipchumba Murkomen noted that the dream of the standard gauge railway is one and in motion. “I believe that the dream of SGR is on, we want to do it expeditiously,” he noted. Kenya wants to leverage the private sector to facilitate the Naivasha-Malaba standard gauge railway construction project. The minister noted that the project, which includes a revamp of the Kisumu port will cost approximately $5.3 billion, which he says is reasonable. Its completion will now pave the way for Uganda also to continue the connectivity project to link the SGR. Other partner states are also in coordination to ensure that the construction of the railway line is fast-tracked.

The State of the Region Regarding the Project

the development of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is synchronic with the development strategies of other East African Countries. Its development is incorporated in national spatial plans with the rail route targeting regions with viable populations and sustainable economic activities. Criticisms, however, revolve around the ballooning debt to finance infrastructural development and the lack of prioritization of mega projects. The railway line will ensure seamless connectivity of various railway networks across the African continent. This is one of the aspects that makes the project dubbed as one of Africa’s most ambitious.

Tanzania SGR Inaugural Tests Launched

Marking a major milestone in the Tanzania SGR project, the Tanzanian government has just recently conducted the Tanzania SGR Inaugural Tests runoff a train on its brand new Standard Gauge Railway between the city of Dar es Salaam to the capital of the country Dodoma. The flagging of the first train on its very first journey on the SGR was done by the Prime Minister of the country, Kassim Majaliwa. The test came after President Samia Suluhu Hassan delivered an ultimatum to the state-run Tanzania Railway Corporation to begin service between the two cities by the end of July 2024. It marks a significant milestone for Tanzania as it attempts to modernise its outdated transport infrastructure. 

The new Tanzania SGR project is expected to commence its operations in the month of July this year as part of the Tanzanian Government’s $10 billion SGR International Strategic Railway Programme, with the inaugural trip transporting a small group of the local religious leaders of the country to its trial passenger operations in order to mark the celebrations of 60 years since Tanzania became independent.

“This day marks history towards the culmination of a total of 60 years of the Union of the Republic of Tanzania-with the launch of the standard gauge railway that runs all the way from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma indicating that there is still a small part remaining in order for us to start the official journey of the project as a country,” Prime Minister Majaliwa said in a statement.

Commencement of the Tanzania SGR Operations

The ceremony that launched the inaugural service of the SGR project also saw the Tanzanian government promise its citizens that the 627-kilometer line would be opened by July 2024, having delivered 65 of the total 89 passenger carriages that have been ordered for the project. The president was quoted saying, “I have been hearing about changes in the start dates for train services via the SGR railway from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, and indeed, citizens are tired of excuses; they want to see the railway in operation. Therefore, I direct that by the end of July 2024, SGR railway services between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma must have commenced.”

Tanzania Railways Corporations (TRC) also gave an affirmation that 9 of its all new 19 passenger and cargo locomotives had been already delivered for the SGR project of the country. Moreover, just one of the ten Hyundai Rotem EMUs on order was currently in its possession.

Additionally, despite celebrating the major milestone that marked the beginning of the passenger trials, TRC also mentioned that they were particularly very keen to commence the same trials for the cargo operations on the SGR.

Tanzania SGR Inaugural Tests for Cargo Trains

The director general of the TRC Ndugu Masanja said that they were very much longing for the cargo carriages since that is where more economic benefits and opportunities lie. The Dar es Salaam-Dodoma railway line is keeping up with the heavy investment with the country having been accorded $200 million loan from the World Bank so as to upgrade the existing railway line that runs between Dar es Salaam and Isaka.

Nuclear physicist Dr. Kelvin Kemm of Stratek Global, the company behind the local development of a Small Nuclear Reactor system, aims to be ready to export the reactors in five years’ time. He tells BizNews that there has been interest from places as far afield as Canada, “great interest” from Australia, as well as from parties in the Middle East that want to put small reactors in the desert and on the coastlines. Even the US is “very interested”. So are a number of European countries. Several African countries also want to acquire the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Dr Kemm stresses that nuclear power “is incredibly safe” – and “the greenest, cleanest, cheapest, safest power you can get”.

Paul Rusesabagina a accordé un entretien exclusif à France 24. Manager de l’hôtel des Mille Collines dans la capitale rwandaise, Kigali, il a sauvé les 1 268 personnes qui s’y étaient réfugiées en 1994, lors du génocide des Tutsi. Devenu un opposant à Paul Kagamé, il a été condamné pour terrorisme à 25 ans de prison en 2021. Il y passe deux ans et sept mois, avant d’être libéré après une médiation américaine et qatarie en mars 2023. Affirmant avoir été torturé et avoir frôlé la mort, l’opposant voit dans sa libération “un miracle”.
