MOISE KATUMBI: A PERFECT DOLPHIN OR A NEW RENEGADE?

Surrounding for years the closest circle of President Joseph Kabila, Mr. Katumbi is the faithful or was the faithful among the most faithful of the Number One, the one through whom in 2006 allowed President Kabila to get 94% of the votes in the DRC`s richest province, Katanga. The man is loved by the people, courted by politicians because of his proximity to the head of state, but mostly because of his wealth.
On the other hand he is hated by those who do not find their share of the riches of Katanga province. The question is, how come, Mr. Katumbi managed to pass from the fish to the head of one of the richest regions of the world?
Born in Kashobwe, from a Congolese mother and a Jewish father, Mr. Katumbi had a sense of business from a young age.Having done well in school and university, he prospered in trade, especially in the field of fisheries.
Fallen into disgrace against the former president of DR Congo, the late Laurent Kabila, he was forced into exile in 1997. After Laurent Kabila`s death and several negotiation demands in 2003, he will be finally allowed to regain the country under the blessing of the current president who is none other than the son of the father, Joseph Kabila.
On his return, Moise Katumbi recovered in the mining business through his company, Mining Company Katanga (MCK) The most interesting thing is the phenomenonal ascension since his return. He appears to be very generous in crowded meetings, thus he has never failed to distribute dollars to people.
For many of his detractors, the growing popularity and especially his heavy pocket has become a danger to the head of state. More than that, the blurring between his private business and politics would be one of the reasons for disagreements within his political family.
Back in the days, 2006 when he succeeded to elect his Godfather and current president of DR Congo Joseph Kabila, because of his generosity to people, his popularity built largely by the appointment as head of the football team, the Tout-Puissant (Almighty) Mazembe (one of the richest football club in Africa)
More than that, he won the national and provincial deputation; his loyalty to his political family as a major hard worker befitted him to be the Governor of Katanga Province. Besides Mr. Katumbi being a good speaker, he knows to engage crowds. Wrapping up the title of best governor in the period 2006-2011, his popularity has never been so good, plus the documentary by Thierry Michel (L’irresistible ASCENSION DE MOISE Katumbi) he could be the richest businessman in DRC.
Obviously, he appears to be a threat for his own political family, who see him as an ideal and harmful candidate to the 2016 presidential, so there is an imperative and immediate need to neutralize his ambitions.
However he disappointed Katanga people with many broken promises, lastly he stated in “Jeune Afrique” Magazine (No. 2627 of May 15 to 21, 2011): The political world is hard, politics creates many jealous… According to unofficial sources winding the Head of the State, we heard that Mr. Moise Katumbi was thanked and disgraced, summoned to hand off the position of Governor to Zoë Kabila (brother of the current President Joseph Kabila).
Under auspicious reasons, he became an unpredictable and uncontrollable subject, especially a threat of the power. With the death of the highly respected and right arm of President Joseph Kabila, I mention here the Late Katumba Mwake. We remember that all are originally from Katanga Province. Mr. Katumba Mwake always was advocating for the cause of Moise Katumbi, after his death, things appear to be different, pit creates more and more with his actual Godfather Joseph Kabila. Clouds are present and their relationship has collapsed. Behind the scenes, it is imperative to drown, which is not that easy, as Mr. Katumbi has built strong relationships around the world, from the White House to the Vatican.
For the “Kabilaists”, the outgoing president should represent again for a third term which is not allowed by the current Constitution of the DRC that has limited the presidential mandate to 2 times, giving the opportunity to the other candidates to represent for the 2016 presidential.
For another thing, South Kivu and Katanga provinces are the two most voted with Joseph Kabila in 2006 (98%, 94%), actual events seem to be quiet different as the South Kivu is acquired by Vital Kamerhe other time very closed to surrounding of Government especially to President Kabila, now a heavy weight of the opposition. And currently Katanga is foreseeing Moise Katumbi as ideal potential candidate for 2016 presidential, no one else. It is virtually impossible and very hard for Mr. Kabila to win the elections without these two great provinces, South Kivu and Katanga.
Is the divorce finished? Since his return after an overseas stay of several months for medical reasons, according to some. December 23, 2014, the Man who used to highlight the unwavering supports of the president Kabila seems to crossed the board. From then on, there is no longer praises to the “One” from whom he owes a part of his fortune unlike usual. Is this a political maneuver of his political family? These are questions that only time will enable us to answer.
