China`s seventh largest desert: From dust to wealth

The Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia is the 7th largest desert in China. Anti-desertification programs have proved that it is quite possible to not only halt the spread of a desert region but to completely transform an inhospitable environment. By increasing the productivity of the desert everything has changed for the benefit of the people who live there, for the wildlife which is now returning and for the environment. More than 102,000 people from this region no longer live in poverty. In 1988 the region`s rainfall was less than 100mm per year. It is now 456mm per year.
